Music Review - Lady Gaga's Born This Way

There is nothing to question when one says that Lady Gaga is one of the front running and most influential artists of today’s pop music. Fans and critics alike anticipated the direction that her sophomore album (or album 2.5, if you are a person who counts The Fame Monster EP as a half-album) would take. It resulted in Born This Way, which the star herself described as some of her best written and composed material. I will be frank. It took me nearly two months after the disc’s release to listen because I was skeptical towards my own reception. After downloading an mp3 version of the album, I stood in my living room and opened my ears. Born This Way is far out from the city of Sophomore Slump and would not step anywhere near it’s jurisdiction.

Nearly 35 seconds into the album, I find myself dancing like a sexual free spirit in a gay club to “Marry The Night”, Gaga’s ode to her beloved New York City and to both it’s traditional and countercultural sides of the nightlife. The title track is one of the highlights of the album, becoming the gay anthem for the 21st century. The lyrics resonate and reverberate to many during a time where there has been much progress in the LGBT plight for equality, such as the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and New York cementing it’s status as the most recent state legalizing same-sex couples to marry. “Judas” creates a fictional narrative using Biblical characters, Gaga being Mary Magdalene, and it is in no way a mockery of Christianity, despite recent controversy from representatives of the Catholic faith. In fact, it is one of the most danceable tracks that have been weaved into this masterpiece. “Americano” takes a stab at addressing the injustices of undocumented workers in Arizona, standing out as one of the songs where Gaga hammers her passionate activism on causes that are close t o her heart. She delves into other parts of herself, speaking about personal freedom and independence in “Hair”, in which the late great Clarence Clemons contributes with some of the smoothest sounds he ever produced; he also blows sax on “The Edge of Glory”. “Scheibe” bids for female empowerment and stripping oneself from society’s crucial conditions of what it means to be a woman and addressing the power within.

There are few musical eccentricities in other tracks that I haven’t been able to find comfort with, such as tracks “Government Hooker” and “Bloody Mary”, but they are not failures. I would call them minor favorites. Say what you want about Lady Gaga. Say that she is overrated. Say that she has no talent. Say that her music does nothing to uplift. What Gaga has done is craft a phenomenal compilation that surpasses volumes in the world of current American music and culture. It is a tour de force of self-acceptance and universal open-mindedness that has become a very important album for this generation. Let’s see if the Born This Way Ball is equally as triumphant.

Haha wow a little late for the album review, but a nice summary nonetheless. First and foremost, welcome to hubpages. I have 2 suggestions for this hub, the first being try and find a better quality image of the cover, the one you have is veyr pixely and detracts from the appearance of the hub. Secondly, for this and future reviews, try and split it into different sections and make it more in depth. This is kind of short and not very comprehensive so ultimately the hubscore won't go that high. Just some tips for the future. :)

It was hard to find a better image of the album. I know it looks pixely, but it really was the only image I could find. Thanks for your suggestions, but I personally like my reviews to be straight to the point instead of being in depth. But thanks anyway. I'll still take them into consideration.

Nice review and welcome to hubpages! It's never too late for a good Gaga review. I eventually warmed to "Gov't Hooker" though I initially felt the same as you. I have only recently come to appreciate "Heavy Metal Lover" myself. Overall a pretty spot-on review. I have a bunch of Gaga hubs- check em out if you like! Keep writing- looking forward to more.

:) I'll check your Kravitz review out later- I'm excited to hear he's going to be in the film version of "The Hunger Games", which is a great book.

Great review. No matter what you think of Gaga, you cannot deny the fact that she is a powerful franchise with an incredible force. Her detractors will always deride her for being a Madonna imitation, even down to "Born This Way", and her shock value tactics will always receive mixed reviews, but she is and always will be singularly, Gaga. She's finding her way easily, whether her detractors and critics want her to.

I personally didn't care for her at first. I found her music completely too formulaic and predictable in form and her sensationalistic tactics too gimmicky. However, regardless of what anyone thinks of her technically, she writes and establishes a long string of hits. And so I dare anyone to catch up with her in the short space that she has tromped on the music industry. Her gimmick, approach, or whatever you want to call it is singular. A meat dress does not endear. It states and shocks in everyone's face. Fearless and bold have a place of admiration, even when it may be reckless at times.

Like her or not, she is a franchise and statement of American life and times, and she is not going away any time soon.

Additionally, I think you are a fine writer and strong insights, and am glad to find you here on HP. I used to have about 60 hubs published but have since unpublished and republished in other places. Perhaps I'll warm to HP again at some point, but as I check in here from time to time, I'm always glad to find another insightful, great writer.

All good things to you, nu-flowerchild. :)

I don't like the comparisons to Madonna at all. I don't see it.

Thank you for commenting and for your kind words. I do hope to see some new Hubs from you in the future. In the meantime, I will check out some of your previously published work on your page. Once again, thanks for stopping by, Daniel. ;)
